Hey gents, dunno WTF is happening - 6 loads of spam today seems a bit above the norm. Trying to keep up on it, but I feel the board is getting cluttered by spaminated topics. Gonna CC this to the powers that be, but how bout ignoring spam with no replies for the time being so I can just erase the offending posts altogether in an attempt to keep things neat.

Thanks all.
Jim.

Any idea why the bombardment or is this just a statistical anomally?

Dunno, might there be a new spamming revelation whereby such boards can be auto registered and spammed? Or are the spammers just finding shills to post for cheap?

"Our members have made a total of 69,925 posts
We have 4,834 registered members"

Over 4k potential customers prolly makes the board a tempting target, although that's a bit misleading since many join for a single problem and don't return once it's solved.

Maybe we should show only the number of members posting in the last few months (or none at all). If I was hand typing any of this stuff I'd sure target larger memberships, and even the bots might.

Just a thought. dunno.gif

Cheers, Mac

is there a way to delete threads, rather than just editing them? Or giving certain members (say, people with 1000+ posts, or something) the right to either delete, or edit and lock threads to help you guys out...?

We have to find some way to deal with this shit. I was on here a couple of weeks back & had to sit & watch this clown posting spam after spam after spam. I fired a PM at him to try & stop the flow, but to no avail. I tried to PM Jim, but I guess he wasn't online at the time. Very frustrating experience. I hate malignant marketing! One reason why I never watch TV. mad.gif

Thanx for the suggestion, I'll talk tomorrow with The-Force if this is a possible solution to the problem. For the rest it is best to ignore all spam related topics until they are deleted.

Maybe try to pick members that are on at different times, in order to have someone garding the forum as close to round the clock as possible. cool.gif

I have been here for awhile. Does this site do e-mail comformation to be a member? I know some e-mail addy's are throw aways but this may help. Plus posting the IP add'y of the spammer may give others something to do! Provided the spammer is not using a bot!

I discussed this issue with The-Force today and the plan is to create a new group this week, where each member will also be able to delete/edit posts or delete entire topics. We don't know yet who or how many to select for this special group, but I think this will not be a very big problem... wink.gif

This site has e-mail conformation and during registration a picture-code must be typed in to avoid bot registrations. What would you do if you have the IP-address of a spammer?

A friend and I used to do that on IRC.. 2 dial-up connections could easily knock DSL/cable off-line. bye1.gif
Wonder what 10 of us with broadband could do biggrin.gif

Ping floods aren't even the worst of it. devil.gif

(Maybe reading that will make the spammers think twice.)

I doubt that spammers read anything, they just post & go on to the next site. cool.gif

What about those poor (stupid) people who let their PCs act as spam machines? Would it be right to flood them?

2 dialups knocking out a dsl eh? Well, the only solution to stop that would be to *censored due to spammers reading it*

Today, we created a new "Spamminator Taskforce" group with the specific purpose to remove spam posts/topics as soon as possible. For more information see this topic in the forum announcements...
