Got me an SMPS with a few blown parts on the input filter.

There is an X1 rated capacitor marked 8235 (which I'm 'guessing' is 82000pF? = 0.082uF?) for which I cannot find a matching spare. It's one of 6 in the input filter.

I don't suppose there will be too many issues if I change it for a 100000pF = 0.1uF device???

8235 nothing else, no letters or other numbers? Is that SMT..?

I would suggest taking it out and measuring it, but that doesn't work too well with dead components rolleyes.gif

Roughly what size of filter is it, teeny tiny, couple amperes, humongous?

15mm diameter, 5mm thick (perhaps) - no other markings.

Also found a blown NTC thermistor and only source is via USA sad.gif through farnell components. 50c part and $25 delivery mad.gif

My usually inexhaustible junk box didn't come up trumps this time..... dry.gif

farnell doesn't have any other thermistors? can probably fudge the value a bit...

yeah man , that is absolutely insane !
time to start gathering up those old ATX supplies .
old tv chassis should have them (not the one for the degaussing coil !) .
the part is not super critical ... a reasonable replacement would work ok .

Can't really risk using 'near enough' parts as it's from a PSU in a 4-post 3-phase car lift. One of the drive units has this PSU fault and the workshop owner doesn't want to fork out $1,500 for a new board but equally doesn't want 'non-standard' parts used for the repair.

Hence the need for the US-ordered part (NTC thermistor) and the only other ones Farnell do that were the right value are also US-delivery items..... rolleyes.gif

Filter cap looks like it failed and the thermistor went with it (or vice versa) - I've not checked the SMPS controller (yet)- a TOP247 integrated SMPS device - but have spares on hand in case the MOSFET in it went doolally and caused the original 'explosion'.....

now that you have explained things a bit more ... order up a couple of them .

i don't have any parts orders going in for "components" ... just big chunks for comps .
who carries them over here ?

Yup, standard practise - order 'enough' (and always be one short laugh.gif ). I've got extras coming but, typically, won't EVER use them - until I chuck them away and need them the following day rolleyes.gif

heh heh heh ... yeah man , i know what you mean .
or ... they get stirred in and you play hell trying to find them !

for three weeks i have been looking high and low around the joint for a 10"x6"x2" box of "3M shrinkable clear film" (think along the lines of clear visqueen) .
i use this to cover/seal windows that do not need to be opened in the winter as well as sealing off the air conditioner and a couple of other items .
it is surprising how much lower the propane use is when lousy windows from the 50s-60s are sealed off (yet another roundtuit project) .

i even looked in the kitchen cupboards ... because "ya just never know ..." . dry.gif
i dug around in the five closets .
i looked in the garage and two sheds (just like the monty python skit , only my name is not arthur) .

i intensified the search when the temperature started to drop four days ago (it is -22F as i write this)
i finally gave up this morning at 0400 and resigned myself to going down to the hardware store when they opened up and buying another box of the stuff .
in the interim i figured that i would tidy up my radio/comp room ...
i moved some boxes towards the doorway for sorting through and further migration to the trash .
the sixth box i opened contained , as it's sole occupant , the box of film i had been looking for !
i honestly cannot remember putting it in there and then burying it in with the boxes of computer stuff and electronic parts ...
i have a notion that the gf had a hand in it .

100% guaranteed the GF had a hand in it ...

Ooo this box is in the way here in the closet .. Hmm same box like all that sh!t in his Comp room.. Bah .. stick it in there, he'll find it if he needs it..

My wife has the exact tendency .. Something could be in the Closet for months, and one day because "She's cleaning up", it gets halled out and either tossed out, or put in a plastic packet and put in a random shelf/counter/corner of the garage.. And then when your looking for it, and you ask, "Honey, Have you seen 'XX' " ... The only answer ever, "How the F. am I supposed to know where you put your junk, look where you last put it.."

Started moving her sh!t around now too, Just random move this from here to there, However it's not sinking in...

Much to my surprise the USA stuff arrived within 3 days.... maybe the $25 delivery charge WAS justified after all wink.gif

Just back from fixing the PSU and all is ok but needed a spare hour to figure out how to re-sync the four lifting posts! Typically this is a piece of equipment that the manufacturer just does NOT provide ANY information on (well, when they can charge $3000 for a replacement board - as I was informed today ohmy.gif ) you can see WHY they want to keep it all in-house.

Tough sh1t for them that I figured out how the thing worked myself laugh.gif and the repair only set the owner back a very small fraction of the board replacement cost thumbsup.gif

Everyone happy thumbsup.gif

yep ... just like re-calibrating those alignment heads that clamp on the tires/rims in a tire shop .

after repairing a dropped unit (mmm ... little crunchy bits) there was a "normal" calibration sequence that matched a particular head to a specific channel on the big machine .
there was a hidden alignment/recalibration function that required moving a jumper on the interface board(s) , this placed the machine/cpu in the "square zero" mode for a particular channel/head .
there was no "OSD" for these functions ... all done by alphanumeric readout of several led displays and two big (and i do mean big) analogue meters on the machine .
