Anyone have any suggestions on finding a break in the underground wiring for a dog fence. My alarm went off at 3 a.m. and the only thing I can think of is the frost in the ground moved dirt etc and broke the line. Ive checked the transmitter and it working fine.

Sorry cant help. But I do hate those things when they shock the dog. Just get a real fence instead of harming the dog.

Should try it on your neck and see how you like it. And then notice how much softer your dogs neck is and how much more it must hurt.

Sorry I just despise those things. You wouldn't shock your kid.

I agree with Evil! Get some morals! You cruel bugger!

I've personally never heard of these before. So i youtube'd it and found this!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OhvrTSpMtU0

It's shocking what a person will do to a pet that they're suppose to love and care for!

Watching that video, knowing that a poor defenceless pet is being tortured like that makes me want to come round with a taser to see how you like it.

whoa ... hold the weddin' !

@ shocker and ED :
are you aware of how those devices actually work ?
have you ever actually used one ?
you do know that they are adjustable in intensity and sometimes are a last resort with "stubborn" dogs .
sure beats having them shot by a neighbor or run over by a car .

sure , they can be abused by an owner that has a lack of morals ... this is the same type that would beat on a dog with a stick .
then again , just about any technology can be abused .

@ OP :

you are right about the frozen ground breaking the wire .
"frost heaves" can snap fair sized wires .
many of those devices can be "sniffed" by going along the line area with an AM radio .
many manufacturers have instructions for how to do this .

I am aware of how they work and I have been shocked by one. Any intensity level, it hurts!

It's wrong. Just get a REAL fence and be more responsible is all I have to say.

Gotta love it when carnivores get all compassionate. Electric fences are common and quite possibly were used on the contents of your last hamburger. biggrin.gif

Animals rarely (if ever) get shocked once they learn the boundaries, and they generally learn pretty quick.

The OP just wants help with a perfectly legal electronic device, and this IS an electronics forum. Members are not obligated to participate in topics that annoy them. beer.gif

We have used one for all our dogs- there is absolutely nothing unethical about it. Honestly, the dogs learn very quickly where the boundaries are and therefore rarely get shocked. And when they do, it is more of an annoyance to them then hurting them. They also have a bi layer of furr protecting them, so of course it's going to hurt more on a human.

For the OP-

Do you have any friends who work for the phone company, or perhaps a cable co? They will most likely have something similar to this:

http://www.gcitechsource.com/greenleeprogr...nertestset.aspx

Basically it is a frequency generator and pickup that can sense the signal in proximity. It only connect one end, you might be able to follow the signal until it stops.

Thanks for everyones response. Its was actually entertaining to read the responses.

ED- the fence that I have actually pulsates as the dog gets closer to the fence AND if properly trained you can avoid the shock all together. AND you can adjust the intensity. AND because I was concerned about my dog I actually tried it and it really wasnt that bad! My kids didnt think so either. LOL. I appreciate your concern for animals but there is a huge difference between a dog and a child.

Shocker - Morals? Really? BTW ive been tasered and guess what? I didnt do what caused me to be tasered Again! lol.

Thanks again for the help crane550, Mac from OK, and CWB. Thats what I was looking for! not getting opinions on animal cruelity.

Without knowing your layout, I only comment generally.

You said you have frost in the ground. If your driveway is over a frosted part of unpaved ground, I would suspect this area. The frost will expand the earth and when it thaws in spring the earth get porous and driving over it will compress it more than the ground around. This may cause wear and strain on the cable and eventually break it. You may think of putting the cable in a protective tube under the driveway.

Good luck in your search.

CODE
Just get a real fence instead of harming the dog.

Guys, spending the time and money to install an electric fence is an incredible burden that shows how much someone cares about their dogs.

A "real fence" doesn't always work. Beyond digging under it, perhaps this gentleman has trees on his property that the dog can climb to jump over the fence, or building codes preventing a real fence.

The dog with the invisible fence is a lot happier than the one chained to a post.
